1 in 20 Cafe – Hot Water Heat Pump
1 in 20 Cafe is a hospitality business located in The Basin in the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges.
Recently they replaced their old electric storage hot water system with a modern heat pump unit. Thanks to the Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU) program, about half the cost was covered, leaving them with only a $1,300 out-of-pocket expense.
“We use a fair amount of hot water, so since installing the heat pump system I estimate we’re saving about $100 a month in energy costs,” says Dave the owner of 1in20.
He was so impressed he has also connected his dishwasher to the pre-heated water supply, delivering further savings.
Other measures:
Monitoring: In order to make informed decisions the cafe used plug-in power meters to check how much electricity each of their appliances were using. These can be borrowed from your local library.
Solar: 1 in 20 have also added a 19kw solar PV to their rented roof which has almost halved their total energy bill and almost paid itself off in a year.
